Elle Leon’s Story of a Yogi

How did you first discover Bikram yoga?
As an avid runner, running friends suggested a yoga practice could improve my distance running. I researched a few studios in the area and saw that BYSJ offered a Groupon, which introduced me to the prescription my body and mind needed.

What have you gained from your yoga practice?
Better self-care, for all things! This practice has taught me patience, reflective self-awareness, and many other benefits. Admittedly, I LISTEN BETTER NOW! This practice has helped me grow personally and professionally. I’m learning to live in the present and am beyond grateful!

What has been your greatest struggle or accomplishment?
This practice has helped me gain a sense of calm. Simply trying to do better is good enough. Some days, my practice is AMAZING, and others, not so amazing. Like the course of life, it is a work in progress. Learning to respect my body and what I put into this temple is the (ROI) return on investment. On the days I do not practice, I feel a sense of loss in my circadian rhythm. It’s as if I ignored breakfast, lunch, or dinner. That is what it feels like for me.

What advice would you give new students or those struggling with their practice?
Keep the door open for all possibilities. I found this practice one of the most challenging sequences to do DAILY! However, it is also a space to learn, grow, and experience discomfort and pleasure. If you fancy it like our daily lives, it is the SAME! Learning to live within the discomfort is the reward. You will be able to get it because of the teachings. If you have questions, ask the teachers; they’re a great source of information. Come into the hot room to simply listen and do as the teachers say. When it feels hard, take a break and then continue. If all you ever do is try, you will feel stronger, and your practice and poses will get better. It is all about showing up; the rest will come into play. You will like yourself more because you did something good for yourself! Let it happen in the hot room.

What do you like to do outside of yoga?
Outside of yoga, I spend time with family and friends. I have two fur babies, Pippa and Zoe. When I’m able, I love traveling in this vast world and learning about other cultures and people. To me, BYSJ is reminiscent of that same principle; I am learning, enjoying this practice, and meeting wonderful individuals along the way!
